My post on the plaza with the original cathedral contains some errors. The plaza with the Old Cathedral is NOT named for the former president: it is El Plaza del Gran Siglo XVI - The Plaza of the Grand 16th Century. The statue in its center is NOT dedicated to the heroes of the day Garcia Moreno was assassinated. A street nearby was. The statue is dedicated to the heroes of the 10th of August 1809. Correct month, entirely incorrect date and year. As best I can tell from the signage, that's the day of an important coup. I'll hazard a guess that it's related to Ecuador's independence.
