Random Musings

  • It merits repeating; If a food service establishment has some combo of:
    • fewer than 4 walls,
    • no actual door,
    • a roof of unsteady and potentially dangerous nature,
    • nothing but locals within,
    • and a staff with visible osteoporosis,

      I SUGGEST YOU EAT THERE

I have never chosen to go to a Michelin starred restaurant.*  I have been to one (1 star, NYC).  Taken to dinner by a friend and informed of its status mid meal.

That was a wonderful meal.  The company that made it so.  (Thank you to my DNF friend, I hope things are going well.)

The food was complex and delicious.  These days, I'm a simpleton.  Deeply in love with the dishes that have built peoples and fed cultures.

  • I'm sitting in the same chair as I did for yesterday's entries.  Out of the sun and in the breeze, a 30C temp (34C apparent temp) with winds of 3 Knots (Beaufort 1) is ... chilly.  That's 93F (apparent).  WHOA!  What is happening?  Wind and shade are magical things here.

  • The move is still scary as hell. But, fear is no reason to stop stepping forward.  I think of it like a new found phobia I've developed.

I'm not afraid of heights any more than in the past.  If I'm strapped in a bosun's chair, shoot me up the rig.  If I'm standing on a ledge with a rail, no problem.  If I'm standing on a ledge with protection, I step way back.

My balance is shit.  Maybe I'm more aware of it here because of the very uneven and inconsistent walking surfaces.  So heights ain't the issue.  It's the free fall.

Now that fear has spread to objects in my possession.  Dropping my phone.  Having the wind blow my hat off.  I have become terrified of these things.

So, I use the chin strap on my hat, I hold the pop socket unless it interferes with my photography.  And, I stand back from the edge so that things will bounce at my feet before tumbling away... 😅

    I'm a nut.

  • It took a long time last night, but I fell asleep without an Ambien.  Little victories.  It means I can save some for the flight home and they will be pretty effective then.

The funny thing is I had coffee for the first time in a few weeks late yesterday afternoon.  Why?  Dunno.

  • I need a nickname for the post in the water I love to photograph.
    • Stumpy - seems too dismissive
    • Bob - not actually true
    • Peg - I assume phallic objects are masculine (I know, uncouth.)
    • Mark - hmmmm, that might fit although it's not a navigation aid

    • Harrison - hmmm, too subtle?  Those pictures are about the passage of time.
    • Gnomon - so obscure as to be perfect?  Nah, just too obscure.

*Including at least 4 trips to Donastia (San Sebastien) in the Basque Country.  Not sure if it still does, but for a long time it had the highest stars per capita in the Michelin world.  We were never tempted.  The pinchos in the local bars were the draw for us.  YMWV. (Will not May)
