An Initial Sense of Time and Place

It was a long trip, that's the context for this ramble.

I posted yesterday's post circa 1500 local.

I lay in bed tossing for maybe 2 hours.  Darkness settled in, expectedly, at 18:30.  I was not awake.  I know that because I did not awaken again until midnight.  Then it was 0800 next.  That was a really good way to start the trip.

When I got moving I could, and still do, discern I'm jet lagged.  Still mind fuzzed. The sun is nearing the equator; it feels decidedly more powerful here than at 35N.  The body knows it.

I know from experience I will want to walk my way to the next phase.  And that in 90F and 85% RH that will be as adverse as it was on the previous trips.  Dehydration and sunburned ears.  A little wiser than last time I was on the South China Sea...let's see if I can stay on the path.

So, I walked the nearby area.  At this stage, I wanted a/c and was a bit menu shy at a few outdoor Kopitiams.  So I found a place that was much more upscale. But, not very satisfying.  Mee Goreng Ayam, - stir fried noodles w/chicken.   I was hoping for what I had in Kuching before.  This screamed Cantonese not Malaysian.  Sigh.
No, this is not emergency hair.
It's chili sauce.
It's not the same or as good as Sambal.

RM 20 with a pair "3 Masam" to drink.  In Kuching it was 3 Assam.  Their the same drink - 3 Sour (sour plum, lemon, and the local limes, which have a tangerine element to their taste.)

Back to the room.  To chill and chill out.  Maybe 1/2 mile in total left me drenched.  A shower and restless 2 hours.

I walked again. just to stopped tossing.  Imagine if your local 7-11 had tables where you could enjoy the breeze while you sip your plum soda.  And get kindly hectored by this:

Lunch time.  I asked the concierge where he'd suggest some street food.  I know of the place he suggested from my research...it was a good idea.  But it as too far.  Along the way I stopped here instead: {I literally stopped writing here at 1505 MST Thursday - and woke up at 0630 Friday!)

About 2 NYC blocks.  Maybe 4 here.
Kuan Seng Cafe
Shot from Pullman Hotel.

The Auntie cooking was aghast I showed up so late - "We open at 0600".  The were out of Mee noodles.  So, I had "Kolo rice vermicelli" for lack of a known noodle word.  Not the same.  The alkaline wheat noodles are better for dry dishes.  Auntie reiterated they open at 0600.  I noted that I don't.  I promised to return in the morning 0800ish.

Back to the hotel where I really hit the juice.  Hard

Even at $15 a jug (RM 62!!!), I'd do it again.  Fresh.

Started to write this and just lost all steam.  Maybe the picture of watermelon just had something to do with it; more likely the sun and humidity.  There is a good breeze here, but finding it is difficult at times.  Fewer flags in this part of town than anywhere in Kuching. Gotta find the invisible by feel here.

Alas and alack (as somebody I know is fond of saying) it's

Cats : Kuching
Seahorse Statues : Miri

I've actually seen more poodles than cats here, I think. Exactly 2:1. I know the poodle count is 2.00000000.

And, the toy poodles were shocked to hear a 'mat salah' whistle at them. They did stop running from their owner. They looked very confused by the whole scene. The dogs were utterly bewildered by me.

Who amongst us isn't?
