Tuesday, 01 June - (Martes) Maó... I wandered a bit. We worked on the boat a lot. The teak is old and worn. So Richard wants to sand it down. To do this we have to take the silicon caulking down first (or it rips out when sanding or planing the wood). We've tried all sorts of things with varying degrees of success. But yours truly suggested that a corn planer (for feet!) would be worth trying. And does it ever! I finally started looking at return tickets. Looks like a return from Istanbul to NYC is workable. Called and wished Dad a very happy birthday. Wednesday, 02 June - (Miercoles) Maó... More, much more, boat work. Tried to call Dan to say happy birthday....no luck. Richard left this evening to return to London for his grandson's christening. He'll be gone until Monday night. Thursday, 03 June - (Jueves) Maó... Much more deck work. Will it never end? Today we worked in force 6 plus winds as the Tramontaña (Spanish name for the Mistral) has roared into town. Cold, grey, and windy. A bit of wandering too. Friday, 04 June - (Miercoles)... More damn deck work. At least we can take a break in the midday. The hot sun keeps the caulk from cutting correctly. So I spend those hours exploring Mahon. A wonderful place to wander.
In the evening I wandered about unsuccessfully looking for a magic show that was advertised about town. Never could find the right cloister. Saturday, 05 June - (Sabado) Maó... We rented motor scooters today. Memories of the crash in St. Martin are lingering. But the roads are much better here and I wanted to get around a bit. So I'm being careful but having a blast. The island is full of neat little twisty roads through farmlands; cool little coves and beaches; and bizarre little places like the Menorca Cricket Club. Bugs in the mouth and nose remain a less than pleasant thing though. Sunday, 06 June - (Domingo) Maó... More motoring. More sun. More fun. More tapas. Hey, I like this place. I found some very nice beaches.... The beach on the right is a topless one...
Monday, 07June - (Lunes) Maó... I had breakfast, dropped off laundry and then did some boat work. The afternoon was full of personal errands like posting some letters and getting a haircut. (Short again.) I really really like Spain. I just love the place. The people are friendly, the food wonderful (except for a few squids in ink and a couple of orders of octopus), the drinks wonderful, the places both quaint and interesting and so far the weather has been fine too! I'm having fun, learning much, very tan, and missing all of you dearly. |
