On Gawking

Started on: June 25, 2003
Inspired by: A walk down the beach.

I had written a full essay, then my machine had a hiccup and it's lost.  So here's an abbreviated version.

We've all been in those arguments where women complain about men's staring or gawking; with my roving eyes it's a pretty frequent occurrence for me.  After the most recent one I saw a funny bit in The Onion, a great satire paper/website. (The Onion)  I sent it off to the other principal in the discussion and I think we both laughed about it (it's always hard to read humor/sarcasm reactions in brief emails).

Today I walked down the beach on Siesta Key.  A lovely day, I saw lots of beautiful people: some older, some younger, a few men, many women.  I'll admit to gawking at a few of the more breathtaking women.  But I'm not guilty of cat calling and whooping like a group of 10 or so men and boys were.

The tendency to look at the other sex is clearly drive by a biological impulse and a evolutionary need.  So many other animals do it that this seems undeniable.  The desire to appear attractive to the opposite sex is likewise rooted in our genes.  But societal issues complicates this instinctive behavior.  When does appreciation become objectification?  To deny either the biology or the damage of objectification is to lie to oneself.  But where is the balance to be found?

If you go seeking attention, is it fair to complain when you get it?  There were plenty of hard bodies in revealing swimsuits with nice tans and perfectly coiffed hair (both men and women), do they have an argument to object to a cursory glance?

I don't have answers.  In fact I don't have a clue.  Do you?  Reply on The Banter Boards.
